The Largest & Smallest Projects on the boards…
Over the last year, we have had the opportunity to work on two unique houses. One is the smallest house we have ever designed, the other is the largest. Both challenged our design capabilities and engaged us to think at scales we don’t typically work on in the studio.
Our ‘micro’ Texas Porch House was designed for a couple who are Dallas Civic Leaders. The clients’ desire an in-town get-away, reminiscent of a Hill Country Sunday Haus, wishing to set an example of a sustainable lifestyle by living small and growing their own vegetables. This 390 sq ft design, to be located on just over a quarter acre in an industrial area in West Dallas, incorporates reclaimed and energy conscious materials.
Downstairs is the living room with a wood burning stove, an open kitchen, and bathroom. The intimate sleeping loft is accessed by a ladder. Shading the salvaged front door is a gracious porch perfect for a morning coffee or evening cocktail!
Whereas the Texas Porch House forced us to think modestly, the largest house we are designing has allowed us to detail, detail, detail! Set on a 20 acre thoroughbred horse farm in Missouri, this Federal Style home has it all: a dining room that seats 28, a 3000 sq ft master suite, 6 guest suites, and a 2 level 12 car garage. The walkout basement includes an Irish Pub, bowling alley, movie theater, gun range, indoor pool, and fitness center.
Abundant windows and balconies permit numerous views of the natural setting and the planned formal gardens. From the front, the farmland lakes take center stage and the rear balconies look out on a forested valley.
