If there is one house that Richard Drummond Davis Architects has designed that is a hands-down favorite, it has to be this one. Situated in the heart of Highland Park, this French-inspired house merges the best of urban living with the grace and glamour of a French manor house.
In designing this home, RDDA adeptly included all the necessities for today’s lifestyles, while also taking full advantage of the natural beauty of the site, which includes extensive gardens and a creek at the rear of the property.
The elegant approach to the house is accented by a graceful courtyard that greets the visitor. Yet, grace and drama are not the only attributes of the main approach. The entrance is flanked on either side by garage spaces to accommodate the practical need for parking. The identical flanking “gatehouses” each function as two-car garages.
Once inside, the foyer is dominated by the dramatic staircase, which includes a magnificent hand-forged steel railing.
The two story space of the Great Room includes a coffered wood ceiling. An entire double-height wall of windows and doors fills the room with light and offers dramatic views to the verdant gardens and creek at the rear of the property.
A light color palette and ornate carvings and moldings give the formal sitting room a feminine feel. The cabinetry on either side of the fireplace provides display space for the owner’s fine porcelain and collectables.
The library is distinctly masculine with dark wood bookcases and paneling. Here too, French doors and windows provide access to a terrace overlooking the grounds.
The kitchen is decidedly French in style; elegant, while also a relaxing retreat for the family, for casual dining or for informal entertaining.
The wine room, reflecting the owners interest in fine wines, includes custom-designed, wooden wine racks and an inlaid mosaic-style floor.
The master bedroom is an airy and relaxing space with the added benefit of a balcony that overlooks the property’s gardens and creek.
The extensive outdoor spaces take advantage of Dallas’ typically mild climate.
The space embraces today’s popularity of outdoor entertaining–and when all the guests have gone home– provides a quiet enclave to relax and enjoy the joie de vivre.
We think even Louis Quinze would have approved of this home!
