Contemporary on White Rock Lake
Last month’s email and blog focused on the Classical Greek Revival house that Richard Davis designed for former Texas Governor Bill Clements and his wife Rita. This month we take a look at a contemporary residence, the exterior of which was designed by Richard, demonstrating the ability to work with forms and facade compositions that are contemporary.
For decades the most well-known house overlooking White Rock Lake has been Dallas’ version of George Washington’s Mount Vernon, built for oil baron H.L. Hunt in 1929.
Now, almost ninety years later, a contemporary house, designed by Richard Davis, joins the architectural gems that line the shores of the lake.
The interior plan concept was originated by a different architecture firm. The client then asked RDDA to design the exterior facades. The interiors, including finishes, cabinetry, fixtures, and furnishings were designed and selected by Robyn Menter of Robyn Menter Design Associates, Inc.
Richard used smooth stucco, glass,Texas limestone, and a metal seam roof to create an effect that is crisply contemporary, with a nod to Texas Regionalism.
With multiple balconies and patios, the design of the house capitalizes on its location with the front facade facing the lake. The third-floor roof deck offers views, not only of the lake, but also of the downtown Dallas skyline–a unique blending of nature and urbanism.

The combined kitchen, dining room, and sitting area create a comfortable space that caters to the relaxed lifestyle of life by the lake.
The dining area affords unmatched views of the lake, which are particularly spectacular at sunset.
Via sliding glass doors the master bedroom opens out onto a glass-railed balcony that also offers spectacular views of the lake. Elevated in the canopy of the massive tree in the front of the house, the room feels a bit like a modern tree house.
The master bathroom is every bit as chic as the rest of the house. And there is a great view to enjoy while soaking in the tub.
To take advantage of the views and the expansive lawn leading down to the lake, the outdoor living space is located in the front of the house, rather than the traditional location in the rear.
The built-in fire place is perfect for enjoying a crisp autumn evening, while kicking back and watching the sun set.
This house is indeed the ideal urban escape.
