With winter in the rear view mirror, thoughts come to mind of sun and the beach with a margarita in hand.  For a Dallas-based client, who had exactly that in mind, RDDA recently completed a commission for a breath-taking vacation home in Mexico on the Pacific coast of the Baja peninsula, a short drive north of Cabo San Lucas in El Pescadero.

The house is appropriately named Villa Rocas.

Richard Davis’ design for the house is Mexican Modern with cubic forms masterfully collected together in a fashion similar to a traditional Mexican village; yet the massing, volumes, and use of glass in the facade are reminiscent of the International Style.

Cubic volumes of the house are painted different shades of earth tones, inspired by the colors of Mexico.  To ensure that the colors matched Richard’s vision for the facade’s color palette, the client had the colors from the architectural renderings scanned by the stucco supplier.  The colors were then custom mixed to achieve the exact shade desired.  The variation of color adds both interest and depth to the facade, separately highlighting each section of the house.

The client wanted all of the bedrooms located at the rear of the house to take advantage of the magnificent views.  In turn, the rear facade is punctuated by multiple windows, patios, and balconies.

The client also requested a third floor roof deck for entertaining and enjoying the view.

On the interior, a stunning  three-story floating staircase leads one’s eye upward from the entry area.  Centered on an I-beam, steel plates support stone treads.  A decorative pool at the base of the stairs is one of two water features on the interior of the house.

A stream with a waterfall, inlaid into the stained concrete floors, runs from the entry foyer, separates the living and dining areas, and continues under the rear ocean-facing glass doors, ultimately emptying into a decorative pool in the rear terrace. This playful water feature was conceived by the client who is a jewelry designer.

The main area of the house has a large, free-flowing, open floor plan, where the entry area flows into with the dining area, which, in turn, merges with the kitchen and the living area.  The dropped ceiling over the kitchen defines that space visually from the other areas.

Embracing the concept of indoor-outdoor living in this house, the primary patio extends seamlessly out from the kitchen and dining area.

The master suite also boasts its own private patio living area.

The upstairs bedrooms take advantage of the views, as well.

When not soaking up the sun themselves, the owners, a delightful and hospitable couple, rent the house to others who want to enjoy this beautiful vacation home.
