Contemporary House in Preston Hollow

Many people might be surprised to learn that Richard Davis actually began his career designing modernist houses.  While earning his graduate degree in Architecture at Princeton, Richard studied under Michael Graves, the famous “Post-Modern” architect, who, at the same time that Richard was at Princeton, was designing modern buildings influenced by the French modern master, Le Corbusier.  As a result, Richard has always felt a great fondness for modernist design.

Given Richard’s modernist roots, the firm was particularly pleased to have the opportunity to design this gracious, modernist house in Preston Hollow.

The front facade consists of a carefully chosen, interwoven blend of horizontal, rectangular shapes that create a balanced, but asymmetrical arrangement, which Richard likens to the composition of a Mondrian painting.

The façade is punctuated vertically by a stepped tower of windows on the upper left side of the house.The rough texture and coursed pattern of the stone used on the facade contrasts with the smoothness of the glass and siding, lending additional interest to the façade without the use of ornamentation.

The interiors of the house, designed by Joanie Wyll, also demonstrate superb use of modernist principles.  The open floor plan allows one space to flow gracefully into another.

Only the kitchen area is a distinctly defined space.

The open staircase further accentuates the fluidity of the floor plan.

The backyard, designed by landscape architect, Matthew Murrey, features a rectangular pool that echoes the horizontal shapes of the exterior of the house.
